How to Calculate the Grade You Need On Your Final

The formula uses your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight. Enter percentages as decimals when calculating the result by hand.

The formula

Grade Needed on Final = (Target − Current × (1 − Final’s Weight)) ÷ Final’s Weight

Σ (sigma) means add up all of them. Do it once per course, then divide.

Example

Suppose your current grade is 88%, your final is worth 30% of the course, and you want a 90% overall grade.

Grade Needed = (90 − 88 × (1 − 0.30)) ÷ 0.30

Grade Needed = 94.7%

You would need about 94.7% on the final to finish with a 90% course grade.
